Pittsfield Township may seem like just another small town near Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, however this town is home to roughly 35,000. Pittsfield has grown tremendously since it was founded in 1824, however between 1980 and 2000 the population more than doubled going from 12,986 to 30,167. Pittsfield Township was the first charter township in Washtenaw County. Washtenaw County’s rich tradition in education began in what would later be known as Pittsfield Township. The first schoolhouse was erected in Pittsfield Township in 1825. Pittsfield offers its fair share of fun with events like the annual Harvest Festival and a number of parks to enjoy throughout the township.
Pittsfield Charter Township is a charter township south of Ann Arbor in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 27.3 square miles (70.8 km2), of which 27.3 square miles (70.6 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km2), or 0.25%, is water.
When Ann Arbor Township was organized in 1827 it included what is now Pittsfield Township in its boundaries. The township was organized as the Township of Pitt in 1834. The name had been suggested by Ezra Carpenter. The current name was adopted in 1839. It became a charter township in 1972. In 2006 the Ann Arbor District Library opened its Pittsfield branch.
