Magic City Hippies

  • Blind Pig 208 South 1st Street Ann Arbor, MI, 48104 United States (map)

Formerly known as the Robby Hunter Band, Miami, Florida-based self-proclaimed "indie funk" outfit Magic City Hippies specialize in a breezy blend of hip-hop, funk, pop, and beach-bum soul that has drawn comparisons to the likes of G Love & Special Sauce, Maroon 5, and Jack Johnson. They made their debut under the moniker in 2015 via the Hippie Castle EP.

The band's origins begin with singer/songwriter Hunter, who spent his formative years busking and playing loop-driven solo shows. Tired of the grueling one-man show routine, Hunter eventually recruited drummer Pat Howard and bass player John Coughlin into the fold, and the newly dubbed Robby Hunter Band was born. As the hometown trio's repertoire and concert schedule grew, so did their fan base, and by 2015 they had expanded to a five-piece and renamed themselves Magic City Hippies, after the 2013 Robby Hunter Band LP of the same name. The EP Hippie Castle marked their recording debut as Magic City Hippies in July 2015.

Over the next few years, the group self-released a series of original singles, including 2016's "Heart Wants" and 2018's "Franny." Their first full-length followed in 2019.
